Hey Gaz, how about a shed for video games and the like. I have some news on an upcoming Doctor Who video game. Not alot, but it's due by Xmas so the news will soon come thick and fast. Plus there's other stuff out there of course. A new Trek game in the works.
There's also this:
| Quote: | Australian gaming industry hits $1 billion
The Aussie gaming industry has come of age over the last financial year, thanks to sales breaking through the $1 billion mark.
The Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia has announced today that Australia’s gaming industry has officially come of age over the last financial year, breaking through the $1 billion sales mark.
The latest figures from research firm GfK Australia show that the market has seen an overall increase of 30% over the last six months, with more than 5.5 million games and almost 500,000 consoles having been sold since January 1, 2007.
“This is a spectacular result for the Australian gaming industry,” said Chris Hanlon, CEO of the IEAA. “Breaking through the $1 billion mark highlights the seriousness and sheer scale of the industry in Australia.
“Australians are embracing interactive gaming as a preferred form of entertainment and the industry will continue to grow as the technology, games and equipment become even more sophisticated,” he continued.
“Interactive entertainment attracts people from all ages and walks of life who have significant disposable income. The stereotype of gaming as a children’s pursuit is simply wrong, with the average gamer age in Australia at 28.”
The figures also show that hardware sales generated almost $150 million in the last six months alone, while game sales reached almost $264 million during the same period.
During the past financial year, both Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s PlayStation 3 have hit the Australian market, however the IEAA said that the sales of both have not ‘artificially’ inflated the figures, and it is expected that sales of all next-generation consoles will remain strong as retail prices relax and new games become available.
GfK Australia’s Daniel Morse added that the figures put the industry in a good position to exceed all expectations and break another record again this year.
“All platforms performed extremely well considering the average platform lifecycle, which usually sees hardware sales decline a few years after launch as the market saturates and new technology is released,” he said.
Chris Hanlon said that Australia is growing in significance in the international gaming industry, and he said that there are 40 game development companies across the country, employing more than 2,500 people who’ve produced 240 titles.
“By supporting the industry, Australian consumers are feeding the potential of the game creators and technology developers – which will mean cutting edge gaming and a significant contribution to the economy over the years to come,” Hanlon said.
The IEAA will be announcing the next round of figures in January 2008. |
